May Favorites

Holy moly! Where did the month of May go? This month was crazy busy and jam-packed with so many fun things! My cousin Nicole came for a visit at the beginning of the month. She’s my biggest beauty enabler, and so you’d better believe that I got my Sephora fix while she was here. I also got to spend lots of time with Dave’s family. His youngest sister graduated from Georgetown a couple of weeks ago, and it was so great to celebrate everything she’s accomplished. The apartment is coming together nicely. I’ll probably have some photos ready for all of you to see in the next couple of weeks! (It depends on how long it takes me to motivate myself and hang photos…) Favorites-wise, I’ve got lots of fun things to share, so let’s dive right in…

I’ve owned the NARSissist Eyeshadow Palette for ages now, but I never got much use out of it. I liked the colors, but several of the shades aren’t as pigmented as I’m used to. Frustrated, I left it in my drawer and forgot about it. But when my cousin, Nicole, came to visit, she brought hers with her and it inspired me to give it another go. Even though some of the shades are a bit more sheer, I’ve found that I really like it for quick eyeshadow looks. There’s a great range of shades: It has both dark and light neutrals, with a couple of fun pops of color. The colors are grouped logically, which makes it easy to create a look when I’m feeling lazy, and they all blend out quickly.

As I mentioned previously, my cousin Nicole is my biggest beauty enabler. While she was in town, I splurged quite a bit, but the two standout products from my haul have to be Buxom’s True Hue Blush in Indulgence and YSL’s Volupté Tint-In-Oil in the shade Peach Me Love. I’ve been enjoying peachy-shades for the warmer months, and both of these are great for days when you just want to brighten up your face with a little subtle color.

After continuously hearing about how great the Rimmel Lasting Finish Foundation is, I decided to give it a go. Overall, I quite enjoy it, and have found myself reaching for it on most work days. The foundation claims to last for 25 hours. While I haven’t tried it out for that long, I have found that it lasts all day for me without a problem. The strangest thing for me about this foundation is that I find it actually looks better as the day goes on. When first applied, it looks a little heavy on the skin, but after two or three hours, it seems to settle a bit and it appears more natural.

My final, beauty favorite this month has been the Tea Tree Face Mask from The Body Shop. This was one of the first masks I ever tried, and it continues to be one of my favorites. It’s my go-to product when I have a breakout that needs to be taken care of immediately. The day of Dave’s sister’s graduation, I had a big angry zit in the middle of my forehead. I applied this mask and it immediately reduced the size size of the spot and took away most of the redness. I look like a big green monster while I’m wearing this mask, but it’s so cooling and refreshing on the skin that I just can’t get enough.

A couple of other random things I’ve been enjoying…

If you’ve never spelled the volcano candle from Anthropologie, go do it. It smells amazing!  It’s been my absolute favorite candle for several years now, but I’ve never been willing to pay for the full size. Luckily, it was on sale a few weeks ago, and I knew I had to take advantage. If you enjoy fruity, tropical scents, but don’t like things that are overly sweet, this could be your new jam.

I love reading, but I’m so slow that it takes me forever to finish a book unless it’s really good. Dave and I went on a Barnes and Noble date the other night, and I picked up a few new books. On the train ride home, I started reading The Bees by Laline Paull. It’s only been a week, and I’m already almost finished. (Which may not sound all that fast to you, but if you understood how slowly I read– you’d be amazed!) The world inside the beehive that the author imagined is unlike anything else I’ve ever read. I know that I can’t do the content of the novel justice, but the main character is a bee who was born into the lowest caste of worker bees, and through a series of unexpected events, works her way up through the ranks. The hive is described as a sort of dystopian society, and there are all sorts of secrets and dangers. I seriously can’t put it down! I expect to finish it in the next couple of days, and I highly recommend you give it a shot!

Finally, I’ve been loving Parenthood on Netflix. Dave has been traveling for work quite a bit, and so on nights when he’s not home, I just binge-watch all night long. The cast is amazing and the show covers so many great topics. I pretty much happy-cry at the end of every episode. I also can’t get enough of the soundtrack, which is phenomenal. (On a related note, I’ve been listening to James Blake’s cover of “A Case of You” on repeat since hearing it on the show. His voice and the piano are so beautiful!)

I’m looking forward to June! If nothing else, it’s going to be a good month for music! Two of my favorite artists, Florence and the Machine and Nate Ruess are releasing new albums! I’m also excited for my friends’ wedding at the end of the month. Let me know if you’d like to see how I do my hair and makeup for the occasion!

That’s about it! I hope your May was splendid and your June is even better! Feel free to leave a comment below with your favorites from the Month of May! I’d love to hear about any exciting adventures you went on, or neat things you tried out!

Until next time!
