October is always a busy month for me, and this year was no different. This month was jam-packed from end to end. In addition to taking the GRE, there was apple picking, camping, and our annual trip to the renaissance faire. Dave and I celebrated our 6-year anniversary and his birthday.
It’s been a good month for favorites. I find that I don’t do a ton of experimenting makeup-wise in the fall. Instead, I rely on a few, simple products that are easy and reliable. Here’s a sneak peak into what I’ve been reaching for this month.
Now that I’m done with the GRE, I have enough free time for reading again. Lately, I’ve been reading “The Goldfinch“ by Donna Tart. The book is pretty long, and it took a while for me to get into it, but now that I am, I’m hooked! It won the Pullitzer Prize for Fiction in 2014, and I always have people on the train stopping me to tell me how good it is. I’m not finished yet, but at the rate I’m going, I know it won’t be long.
Makeup-wise, I’m obsessed with the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Ethereal Light. I own two other Ambient Lighting Powders, and was initially pretty “meh” on them. However, after some experimentation, I’ve started to learn how each of them really works. Ethereal Light is a gorgeous powder that gives your skin a natural radiance. As someone with combination-oily skin, I can’t easily pull off the dewy-skin trend. This product is a great compromise for achieving glowy skin without looking greasy.
I’ve been super lazy when it comes to eye makeup. On mornings when I feel like I can’t be bothered, I’m loving ColourPop’s Super Shock Shadows. There’s been tons of buzz about this brand on the internet, so I’ll spare you the details, but they really are worth the hype. The product is so easy to use, and so different than anything else I’ve ever tried. Right now, my favorite is Amaze, a pale rose gold shade with the perfect amount of shimmer. It gives my lids a subtle, glossy finish, and works great for everyday. (PS— At just $5 a piece, I’ve amassed quite a collection of ColourPop Eye Shaddows. If anyone is interested in a collective swatch post, please let me know!)
I debated whether or not to include the NARS Audacious Mascara in this post. I’ve been using it for about a month now, and I haven’t entirely made up my mind. On the one hand, it makes my eyelashes look incredible. It really thickens and separates them, while giving them a fair amount of volume. (Which is no easy feat for my super-straight, super thin lashes!) On the other hand, it flakes terribly and makes my eyes water, causing the product to run under my eyes. Also I feel the need to mention that the brush– which does an amazing job of getting to the root of my lashes, also hurts a little bit. It’s very prickly, and I find that it’s mildly uncomfortable. Not enough to stop using it, but enough that it’s worth mentioning. Probably not a holy-grail product, but something nice every once in a while for a night out.
When it comes to fragrance, I’m not terribly loyal. I have a few favorites, but I generally have 3 or 4 in my rotation. However, I purchased the Elizabeth and James Nirvanna White fragrance at a VIB Rouge event back in August, and I have literally worn it every day since. Every day! That never happens. It smells so good. It’s the perfect blend of floral and musk. Lightly sweet, but not overwhelmingly so. This one is staying in my collection for a long time.
And for a few final, random favorites: I’m can’t get enough of the Blue Spruce and Spearmint candle from Sydney Hale. Not only does it smell amazing, but 10% of the proceeds go towards animal rescue! I picked it up at Salt and Sundry, a cute little shop in Union Market. If you’re in the Washington, DC area, you should definitely check it out.
Also, autumn means boot-weather! I have plantar fasciitis, which means that I’ve struggled to find cute shoes that don’t aggravate my heel. However, these cute ankle boots from Aerosoles are just right! I purchased them in black and brown, and have been wearing them pretty much non-stop. The style is the perfect blend between dressy and casual. The heel is just the right height— they’re incredibly comfortable, even when walking to-and-from the train every day. Definitely happy with this purchase.
All in all, October was a pretty great month. Fall is off to a great start, and I’m looking forward to all of November’s adventures! Feel free to leave a comment below– I’d love to know what products you’ve been loving this month! And, as always—thanks for reading! ‘Til next time!
