Word of the Year: Cultivate

Each year, I select a word to guide me through the upcoming 52 weeks. In the past, my words have focused solely on what I’d like to change or how I thought I should be. While I will always strive to grow as a person, I felt that this mindset prevented me from recognizing what I was already doing right– the things I should do more of. This year, I needed a shift in mindset.

My 2019 word of the year is “cultivate.”

cultivate (verb):

1. try to acquire or develop (a quality, sentiment, or skill)

2. apply oneself to improving or developing (one’s mind or manners)

3. break up (soil) in preparation for sowing or planting

Just as a farmer selects seeds from his best crops to plant in the new year, I hope to nurture the good which already exists within me, too. But, in instances where I fall short, I hope that a mindset of cultivation will enable me to grow.
